Seve Ballesteros-Santander Airport
Choose this route when your journey ends at the SDR terminal, for example when connecting with another flight or collecting a vehicle at the airport.
Seve Ballesteros-Santander Airport is located in Maliaño, within the municipality of Camargo. Travelling from BIO means following the Cantabrian corridor westwards and arriving directly at SDR, without going into Santander city first and then travelling back to the airport.
SDR is in Maliaño, Camargo, approximately 5 km before Santander for travellers arriving from Bilbao along the Cantabrian corridor. If you have a flight departing from SDR, there is no need to use Santander city as an intermediate destination.
Choose this route when your journey ends at the SDR terminal, for example when connecting with another flight or collecting a vehicle at the airport.
If your destination is a hotel, home, business, station or address in Santander, book the dedicated city route so the journey continues beyond the airport area.
After landing at BIO, you may need to clear passport control, collect checked baggage or complete customs procedures before you can begin the road journey.
You then need to travel across the corridor to Camargo and reach SDR with enough time for check-in, security and boarding your onward flight.
For an air connection, consider the complete period between the arrival of the first flight and the required arrival time at the second airport, rather than looking only at driving time.
Unlike routes from Bilbao towards Gipuzkoa, Navarra or Álava, the journey to SDR follows the Cantabrian corridor westwards into Cantabria.
The journey begins by leaving the BIO airport area and joining the corridor that continues towards the western coast.
The route continues towards Castro Urdiales and Laredo before reaching the area around Santander Bay.
SDR is in Camargo, on the western side of the bay. The terminal can be reached without continuing into central Santander.
If you are flying from SDR, the correct destination is the airport itself. Santander city only needs to be selected when your journey actually ends at an urban address.
Aena confirms that ALSA connects Seve Ballesteros-Santander Airport with Bilbao. However, there is no direct BIO → SDR connection from Bilbao Airport itself: one possible combination first requires travelling to Bilbao Intermodal and then continuing from there to the Cantabrian airport.
This option requires leaving Bilbao Airport for the bus station first and then coordinating the onward service to Santander Airport.
The journey starts at Bilbao Airport and ends at the terminal in Maliaño, so passengers and luggage remain in the same vehicle throughout the road journey.
If you have a second flight, avoiding the connection at Bilbao Intermodal is not simply a matter of convenience: it removes a ground transport change from an interval that is already governed by an air travel schedule.
Although the airport uses Santander in its commercial name, the terminal is physically located in Maliaño, within Camargo. This distinction is useful when choosing between the airport and hotels or addresses in Santander city.
Carretera del aeropuerto, s/n, 39600 Maliaño, Camargo, Cantabria.
Aena places the airport approximately five kilometres from the city, on the western side of the bay.
On BIO → SDR journeys, luggage can be part of a wider sequence of flights. Passenger numbers alone do not always determine which vehicle is the most suitable.
Include everyone travelling between the two airports.
Large cases may require greater capacity even when there are still passenger seats available.
The choice should take passengers, cabin bags and checked luggage into account together.
Selecting the correct destination from BIO helps avoid booking an airport transfer when what you actually need is a city, a coastal destination or a route inland.
For hotels, homes and city addresses when the journey needs to continue beyond SDR.
An earlier destination along the same A-8 corridor for travellers staying on the eastern Cantabrian coast.
For accommodation and addresses in Laredo without continuing along the A-8 to the Santander area.
For Getxo and the cruise terminals when your journey from BIO ends beside the estuary rather than continuing into Cantabria.
A completely different route towards inland eastern Bizkaia.
For continuing to the Álava capital rather than following the coastal corridor towards Cantabria.
For accommodation, wineries and addresses in Haro via a route heading south rather than along the Cantabrian coast.
A connection from BIO to the capital of La Rioja for travellers whose journey ends in the city rather than Cantabria.
From BIO, this journey changes direction completely, continuing towards Gipuzkoa and France.
A longer westbound journey for travellers whose route continues beyond Cantabria.
Choose Santander Airport when you need to finish at the SDR terminal in Maliaño. If your destination is a hotel, home, station or business in Santander, select Santander city instead.
There is no direct bus from Bilbao Airport terminal to Santander Airport. One possible combination requires travelling first to Bilbao Intermodal and continuing from there to SDR.
As well as passengers and luggage, consider the arrival time of your flight into BIO and the time you need to be at SDR. The overall interval needs to cover leaving the terminal, the road journey and the procedures required before your second flight.
Provide your passenger numbers, luggage details and schedule to enquire about a transfer from Bilbao Airport to Seve Ballesteros-Santander. The road journey connects BIO directly with Maliaño.
