Piraeus is Europe's largest passenger port, with about 19 million travellers a year on ferries and cruise ships. Themistocles began fortifying it in 493 BC as the base of the Athenian fleet. From the airport the car takes the Attiki Odos west and Kifisou Avenue south towards Piraeus (or the coastal route via Vari and Poseidonos), then follows the signs to the gate printed on your ticket.

Many visitors land at Athens and sail from Piraeus the same afternoon. The drive is about an hour, but passport control, baggage and summer traffic all add up.
