Eretria was one of the great cities of ancient Greece and is now a seaside town on Euboea; its theatre held about 6,300 people and had a vaulted underground passage to the orchestra. The Swiss School of Archaeology has excavated here since 1964. Several monuments can be visited freely during museum hours, but the key to the pavilion protecting the House of Mosaics is kept at the museum. The ancient theatre can no longer be visited because of its condition.
