Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port
The French starting point at the other end of the first Camino Francés section.
A direct private transfer takes you from Bilbao Airport to Roncesvalles by road, combining the AP-1 towards Pamplona with the N-135 through the historic approach to the Ibañeta Pass. Roncesvalles is a key starting or finishing point for the Camino Francés in Spain and the location of the Royal Collegiate Church. Your journey is private, chauffeur-driven and quoted at a fixed price when you book.
Roncesvalles is a small historic complex rather than a conventional town divided into neighbourhoods. The main points around the road include the Royal Collegiate Church of Roncesvalles, the pilgrims' hostel and the Posada de Roncesvalles. They are all within a radius of around 200 metres, so the important detail when booking is the final destination itself. Tell us whether you are heading to the Collegiate Church, the hostel or the hotel, and the driver will take you to the corresponding entrance.

The vehicle route to Roncesvalles remains different from the mountain walking route used by pilgrims. Every year from 1 November to 31 March, the Government of Navarra officially closes the Napoleon Route for walkers because of snow, ice and the rescue risks associated with the section between Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port and Roncesvalles, which involves more than 1,200 metres of elevation gain. During this period, the compulsory pedestrian route follows the Valcarlos road (N-135), the same paved road used by private vehicles throughout the year. This does not mean that the road transfer is closed, although winter journeys may require additional time if snow or ice affects the Ibañeta Pass. Pilgrims may also be walking along the roadside on the Valcarlos route during this period.
Public transport connections to Roncesvalles are limited and there is no direct airport service. Travellers using regular Navarra bus services need to coordinate seasonal timetables and change in Pamplona. For pilgrims arriving with walking equipment or groups travelling together, a direct vehicle from the airport provides a single road journey to Roncesvalles instead of relying on those connections and available seats during the main spring and summer pilgrimage season.

Your flight details are recorded when you book, allowing the driver to adjust the collection time according to the actual arrival time. There is no additional charge for reasonable delays.
The Valcarlos road (N-135) remains open throughout the year, unlike the Napoleon mountain route, which closes from 1 November to 31 March. Heavy snowfall can result in temporary requirements for snow chains. Passengers are informed if the forecast indicates this may be necessary.
This is a private chauffeur-driven vehicle service (VTC), rather than a metered taxi. The price is fixed per vehicle and journey, is known when you book and does not change because of occasional traffic delays on the road.
Indicative prices start at €303 per vehicle for 1–4 passengers and €385 per vehicle for 5–8 passengers. The price is quoted per vehicle and journey.
The road journey is approximately 203 km and takes around 2 hours 34 minutes under the stated journey conditions, using the AP-1 and N-135.
