Asturias Airport OVD → León

Asturias Airport to León: the only route crossing the Cantabrian Mountains, and the only one with a toll

The transfer to León covers around 150 km and takes roughly 1 h 35 to 1 h 50, as this is not a coastal journey: it crosses the Cantabrian Mountains via the Huerna motorway (AP-66), the only route on these transfers with a toll. There is no beach at the other end, but an inland city in Castile and León with its own arrival arrangements. Indicative prices start from €239 for 1–4 passengers and from €299 for 5–8.

Crossing the Cantabrian Mountains: the Huerna (AP-66, toll) or Pajares Pass (free)

Unlike the coastal routes, there is no free dual carriageway for the entire journey here: to travel from Asturias to the plateau, you have to cross the Cantabrian Mountains, and there are only two ways to do it. The transfer uses the faster route with the tunnel, which is tolled; the free alternative is a slower mountain pass that is more exposed to the weather. This is the only transfer route from OVD where a toll applies.

Transfer route

Huerna Motorway (AP-66), toll road

Fast and with a tunnel through the mountains. It is a toll road —one of the most expensive in Spain, at around €16 for a car on the Campomanes–León section— and is the default route because of its journey time and reliability.

Free alternative

Pajares Pass (N-630), no toll

There is no toll, but this is a mountain road reaching around 1,300 m: slower, winding and more weather-sensitive. It is a back-up option rather than the usual route for a transfer.

Why León costs more than a similar coastal destination

The greater distance than most coastal routes, together with the Huerna toll, explains why the fare is higher than for a coastal transfer of a similar distance. The price shown when you book is the final cost of the service.

Winter

In cold weather, mountain conditions can affect journey times

From late autumn through winter, Pajares Pass (N-630) can be affected by snow, ice or fog, and restrictions may be introduced during particular weather events. The AP-66, with the Huerna tunnel, is the more reliable route, but if you are travelling at this time of year, it is sensible to allow some extra time and bear in mind that the day's operating conditions take priority over normal journey times.

León is not the coast: an inland city, the Camino and railway stations

At around 837 m above sea level and already in Castile and León, León is a very different type of destination. There is no beach to pinpoint, but a city with clear arrival points: the old town and Barrio Húmedo around the cathedral, the railway station, the bus station and the hostels along the Camino de Santiago, which crosses the city from east to west. In an urban destination, the exact address determines the pick-up point and journey time far more than the city name itself.

Asturias Airport to León transfer

Camino travellers, groups and bulky luggage

If you are arriving for the Camino Francés —with backpacks, bicycles or as a group—, or if several passengers are travelling with luggage, the vehicle may need to be different. It is worth checking the Zonetransfers fleet to make sure the vehicle has enough seats and luggage space before booking.

Here, the train is a genuine alternative, but the journey starts outside the airport

Unlike the coast, León has good rail connections: since the Pajares railway variant opened, the high-speed journey from Oviedo to León takes around 1 h 05 min. The catch is that the airport has no railway station, so you first need to take a bus to Oviedo or Gijón and then catch the train. If you are travelling light and staying in central León, this combination can be competitive; with a group, luggage, a late-night arrival or a destination outside the city centre, a direct door-to-door transfer takes care of the entire journey in one go.

Specific questions about your León transfer

Does the transfer price include the Huerna toll?

The route uses the AP-66, which is a toll road. The price shown when you book is the final service price, so the important thing is to confirm the total there before completing your booking, rather than adding the toll separately.

Is León in Asturias?

No. León is in Castile and León, south of the Cantabrian Mountains. The airport is in Asturias, but the destination is on the plateau, after crossing the Huerna; that is why the journey is longer and quite different from a transfer to any coastal town.

What happens if it snows at the pass?

The usual transfer route is the AP-66, through the Huerna tunnel, which is the more reliable option in winter; Pajares Pass (N-630) is the route most affected by snow. During severe weather, the day's operating arrangements may be adjusted, so if you are travelling in winter, it is worth booking with some extra time in hand.

Can you take me to a Camino hostel or a specific station?

Yes. Provide the exact location —hostel, railway station, bus station or hotel in the city centre— and the transfer will end there. In a city such as León, providing the precise address makes it possible to set the pick-up or drop-off point correctly and calculate the journey time accurately.
