A single motorway corridor separates the airport from Villaviciosa. What makes the transfer different is not the distance, but where you are heading within the municipality: 41 parishes spread across the area and 28 km of coastline, with the estuary dividing it into two shores that cannot be crossed by water. That is why your exact address determines the route.
Leaving the airport at Santiago del Monte, west of Avilés, you join the A-8/E-70, the Cantabrian Motorway, within minutes. From there, it is motorway almost all the way to the Villaviciosa exit, with the final section on the N-632. The entire route in Asturias is toll-free, so there are no toll barriers or chargeable diversions to affect the fare.
With the airport to the west and Villaviciosa to the east, the route skirts the southern side of the Gijón metropolitan area. This is the main point to bear in mind when planning your departure time during busy periods; the rest of the journey is on a continuous motorway and tends to keep journey times more consistent. Travellers coming from Oviedo use a different route, the A-64, but from the airport the natural route is the A-8.
Villaviciosa is more than the town itself. It is a large, spread-out municipality —with 41 parishes and 28 km of coastline— with most of its population concentrated in the town and nearby parishes such as Amandi, Quintes and Arroes, while the inland area is much more sparsely populated. The town lies at the head of the estuary, inland; the coast is several kilometres further on, and the estuary itself separates two shores that are not connected by water. To travel from one side to the other, you have to go around via the town. This is why Villaviciosa, Rodiles and Tazones are not the same destination.
Rodiles Beach, at the mouth of the estuary, is reached via the N-632 towards Colunga —past the El Gaitero factory, around one kilometre from the town— followed by the VV-6 turn-off through Selorio. This is a separate branch from the town centre: if your accommodation is on this side of the estuary, the journey takes a few extra minutes after leaving the motorway.
The opposite shore, home to El Puntal and the fishing village of Tazones, is reached along the road following the estuary from Villaviciosa. It is not simply a continuation of the route to Rodiles: it is a different exit altogether. Providing the exact destination when booking helps avoid crossing through the town twice.
In peak season, the two main beaches around the estuary have different access issues, both of which affect whether it is better to be dropped directly at your destination or try to find parking yourself.
Parking next to the pine grove is chargeable during peak season and fills up early; road access becomes congested on sunny days. Being dropped directly at the beach entrance avoids driving around looking for a space, particularly if you are arriving from the airport with luggage.
During peak season, access to the centre of Tazones is regulated: permitted access is limited to residents and property owners, hotel and shop staff, people with reduced mobility, essential services and fishing activity, along with a 15-minute loading and unloading window. Municipal parking is chargeable (€0.65/hour, with a daily maximum) and very limited —around 66 spaces—, while at the El Riañu junction (N-632 with the AS-256), left turns have been removed and traffic must now use the nearby roundabouts.
Villaviciosa is a cider capital, which means visitor numbers increase around certain dates. In mid-October, the Apple Festival brings several days of events to the town, with activities in the centre affecting traffic and urban parking; throughout the rest of autumn, cider season also brings increased visitor numbers to the cider houses. If you are arriving during these dates and heading into the town centre itself, it is worth allowing a little extra time and agreeing a drop-off point that does not depend on finding a parking space in the centre.
The airport has bus connections to Oviedo, Gijón and Avilés, but there is no direct service to Villaviciosa. To reach Villaviciosa, you need to change in one of these cities for a coastal service and then arrange the final leg to your accommodation or the beach. With luggage —especially if you are heading for the coast, Rodiles, El Puntal or Tazones—, the change and final connection are what can make a direct private transfer the more convenient option.
The difference is less significant if your destination is the town itself; for the coast, public transport takes longer precisely where a private transfer can take you directly.
No. The municipality is large and spread out, and the estuary separates two shores that cannot be crossed by water: getting to Rodiles (east bank) or to Tazones and El Puntal (west bank) involves different routes that branch off after the town. Give us the address or, at the very least, which side of the estuary you are on, so we can avoid unnecessary detours and calculate the journey time accurately.
Yes. The regulations restrict traffic and parking within the village, but allow loading and unloading stops and access for people with reduced mobility, which is precisely how a transfer dropping you and your luggage at the agreed point operates. What is impractical during peak season is entering in your own car and parking inside the village; with Tazones, being dropped off at the door avoids the problem of finding a space.
Rodiles parking is chargeable during peak season and fills up quickly on beach days. If you are arriving from the airport with luggage, being dropped off directly at the entrance saves you from looking for a space and walking back; for the return journey, it is worth allowing extra time when arranging your pick-up, as access becomes congested from mid-morning onwards.
The ~45-minute estimate is for the town itself. If your pick-up is at Rodiles or on the Tazones and El Puntal side of the estuary, you first need to leave the coast and return around the estuary before joining the A-8, so it is advisable to allow approximately 15–20 extra minutes and confirm which side of the estuary you are on to make sure the driver heads to the correct location.
