What the road journey is like
The usual route follows the airport access road (A-81) before joining the A-8, the Autovía del Cantábrico, and from there enters Gijón from the west. The journey is on dual carriageway throughout and there are no tolls, so journey times depend mainly on traffic approaching the city rather than the road itself.
The airport is in the municipality of Castrillón, between Avilés and the coast. The route passes close to Piedras Blancas and Salinas before joining the dual carriageway eastwards. On a typical day, traffic flows freely along the motorway; any extra minutes usually come when approaching Gijón, particularly if your destination is in the city centre or around San Lorenzo promenade during peak times.

The exact address matters: Gijón is not just one location
Gijón stretches along the coast and across several areas with different access routes. Giving only "Gijón" when booking leaves out what has the greatest impact on the final part of the journey: whether you are heading to the pedestrianised old town, the beachfront promenade, the stadium or the hospital area, the drop-off point and journey time can vary. That is why it is best to provide the hotel name or street address.
El Humedal and city centre
The area around the bus station (Plaza del Humedal) and the main shopping district. It is the most direct access from the motorway and is usually the quickest drop-off point.
San Lorenzo and Cimavilla
The San Lorenzo beachfront promenade and Cimavilla attract many hotels. Cimavilla has narrow streets and pedestrianised sections, so a nearby drop-off point may sometimes be arranged instead of stopping directly outside the property.
El Molinón and Universidad Laboral
On the eastern side of the city. On Sporting matches at El Molinón, nearby access roads can become congested, so it is advisable to allow extra time.
Cabueñes, Somió and El Musel
Hotels and accommodation are spread out across the area, while Cabueñes hospital district and the port of El Musel are on the outskirts. Here, a private transfer avoids connections that regular public transport does not cover particularly well.
Dates when getting into Gijón can take longer
During the summer, Gijón hosts two major events that bring large crowds into the city and can affect traffic: the International Trade Fair of Asturias (FIDMA), held in early August at the Luis Adaro Exhibition Centre, and the Semana Grande, held in mid-August. On these dates, as well as on match days at El Molinón, the final part of the journey is the most likely to vary.
If your arrival coincides with the Trade Fair or Semana Grande, having your transfer booked with the exact address helps the driver choose the least congested approach and, where necessary, arrange an alternative meeting point near areas closed to traffic. On normal dates, this factor is less significant and the journey generally remains within the usual 30–40 minutes.

The service to Gijón runs approximately once an hour, with the first bus at around 7:00 and the last at around 23:20 from the airport, terminating at the bus station (Plaza del Humedal), with a journey time of around 45 minutes.
