Santa Margherita Ligure keeps the castle that the Republic of Genoa built by the sea in 1550 against pirates, and its station is called Santa Margherita Ligure-Portofino because it is the closest to Portofino. The SP227 is the only road between Santa Margherita and Portofino and ends in the village. Many visitors stay in Santa Margherita and visit Portofino on the line 1 boat of the Servizio Marittimo del Tigullio, which runs all year.
