Royal Monastery
The main cultural destination and the right drop-off for travellers starting their visit to the Royal Site straight away. It is also one of the most popular stops for private excursions.
Airport pickup from Terminal T1, T2, T3 or T4 with drop-off at the Royal Monastery, your hotel, El Escorial University Hospital, the old town, a private address or the Valley of Cuelgamuros. Your driver heads straight for the Sierra de Guadarrama, so there is no need to go into central Madrid first.
The drive from Madrid-Barajas to the Royal Monastery area is roughly 59 km. In favourable traffic it takes about 50 minutes, but it is wise to allow extra time for the A-6, weekends and the approaches to the Sierra de Guadarrama.

El Escorial and San Lorenzo de El Escorial are two separate municipalities. The railway station called El Escorial is not next to the Monastery gate, while San Lorenzo is home to the Royal Site, the historic centre, hotels and most tourist services. If you are visiting the Monastery or staying in San Lorenzo, give us the monument, hotel or street address rather than the station.
The price is confirmed before you book and depends on your terminal, final address, number of passengers, luggage and the vehicle required. We do not publish a fixed figure for this route until we have a sufficiently verified Zonetransfers rate for it.
The Royal Monastery, El Escorial Hospital, the railway station and the Valley of Cuelgamuros are different journeys, so we quote for your actual destination instead of applying one generic price to the whole area.
The main cultural destination and the right drop-off for travellers starting their visit to the Royal Site straight away. It is also one of the most popular stops for private excursions.
Accommodation, restaurants, the Teatro Real Coliseo de Carlos III and the Auditorio de San Lorenzo are all clustered on the streets around the Monastery. Concerts and cultural events often generate trips here.
Served by the C-8 line and a separate hub from the monumental centre of San Lorenzo.
Located on the M-600, km 6,255. It can be set as the destination for patients, relatives or professionals, and has a car park for patients and visitors.
Outside the town centre and reached by a dedicated road journey. Do not treat it as though it sits next to the Monastery.
La Herrería Forest, close to the Royal Site, is linked to walking routes and excursions, while the Casita del Infante is part of the heritage complex.

From Barajas the car crosses the Madrid metropolitan area to the north-west and joins the A-6. Patrimonio Nacional lists two main approaches to the Royal Site: stay on the A-6 and take the M-505, or use the AP-6 and connect to the M-600.
Your terminal and the traffic on the M-40 shape the first stretch before the car heads for the A-6 corridor.
The main axis of the journey, and the busiest section at weekends, during holidays and on exodus days.
The choice depends on traffic and on your exact drop-off point in or around San Lorenzo.
Weekends, public holidays and snow days can bring more traffic to the A-6 corridor. On those days, do not rely on the fastest satnav estimate if you have a timed entry to book around.
The Royal Monastery is the main tourist destination on this route and can be set directly as your drop-off. The complex brings together the Palace, Basilica, Library, Pantheons, Hall of Battles, cloisters and gardens.
For international visitors who land in Madrid and start their itinerary here, a private transfer avoids going into Chamartín, Moncloa or central Madrid first and then doubling back to the sierra.
We can use your scheduled landing time as a reference, but you also need to allow for disembarkation, possible checks, baggage reclaim and the drive to San Lorenzo. For visits with a reserved time slot we recommend building in a comfortable margin.
The Valley of Cuelgamuros lies within the municipality of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, but not next to the historic centre. Patrimonio Nacional places it roughly 20 minutes by car from the Royal Monastery.
If Cuelgamuros is where you are really going, say so from the start. Stopping in San Lorenzo and then finding a second vehicle splits a journey that can be planned in one go from Barajas.
To see both places in one day, it makes more sense to arrange vehicle availability or a coordinated itinerary than to book two separate transfers.
El Escorial University Hospital is on the M-600, km 6,255, within San Lorenzo de El Escorial. It has a car park for patients and visitors and sits apart from both the Monastery and the historic centre.
Whether you are travelling for an appointment, an admission, a family visit or work, set the hospital as your destination. There is no need to go to the centre of San Lorenzo first.
A transfer from the terminal removes the rail connections and local buses you would otherwise need before reaching the hospital.
If you are bringing several suitcases or other bulky items, let us know so we can assign a vehicle with the right capacity.
Located at Calle Juan de Toledo 4, a few minutes from the Monastery, the Auditorio and the Real Coliseo de Carlos III. A natural stop if you want to finish your journey in the centre.
If your stay revolves around the Royal Site, give us your hotel as the final stop and avoid using the railway station as a generic reference point.
The Victoria Palace also has rooms for meetings and events, so corporate and group travellers are a different profile from individual tourists.
That fits the real distance of the route and our operating range of around 50-65 minutes in normal conditions.
There is no direct public transport link from the terminals to the Monastery. From T4 you can take Cercanías to Chamartín and change to the C-8 line for El Escorial. Buses 661 and 664 also run from Moncloa to San Lorenzo.
| Option | Main advantage | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Private transfer | Terminal → Monastery, hotel or final address | Costs more than individual public transport |
| Cercanías | Budget-friendly option from T4 | Needs a change of train and a last leg from the station |
| Metro + bus 661/664 | The buses reach San Lorenzo itself | You must first travel from Barajas to Moncloa |
| Taxi | Leave straight from the terminal | Intercity trip of almost 60 km |
Lines 661 and 664 terminate in San Lorenzo de El Escorial, whereas the railway station is in El Escorial. From the airport, though, you still have to reach Moncloa first.
The rail network stops at El Escorial, and local transport then continues to San Lorenzo. A door-to-door transfer removes that last leg, which matters when you are travelling with suitcases, children or a group.
San Lorenzo suits schools, cultural associations, international groups, conferences, events and private excursions that want to begin sightseeing as soon as they land.
Suited to couples, solo travellers and business trips with standard luggage.
Extra room for several suitcases, pushchairs and small groups.
For cultural and tourist groups, you can book a minibus or coach with driver in Madrid .

The price is confirmed before you book and depends on terminal, final address, passengers, luggage and vehicle. We quote for your real destination (Monastery, hospital, station or Cuelgamuros) because each is a different journey.
The distance is approximately 57-60 km by road, depending on terminal and exact drop-off point. In favourable conditions the drive takes around 50-55 minutes; we recommend planning for 50-65 minutes because of A-6 traffic and the approaches to the sierra.
We collect passengers from Terminal T1, T2, T3 and T4 at Madrid-Barajas.

The north-west corridor links Madrid with the Sierra de Guadarrama and Castile and León. If your trip continues beyond the Royal Site, booking your actual destination directly saves you using El Escorial as an unnecessary stopover.
Carry on across the sierra to Segovia without stopping in San Lorenzo first.
A western route through the sierra to hotels and the old town of Ávila.
Drop-off at Las Rozas Village, the Parque Empresarial, Las Matas or Ciudad del Fútbol.
For Hospital Puerta de Hierro, Monte del Pilar and residential areas.
Ending in La Finca, Somosaguas or Ciudad de la Imagen.
For Ciudad Financiera Santander or Montepríncipe, without continuing to the sierra.
Drop-off at Chamartín if you would rather make the rail connection to El Escorial from Madrid.
Heading further west? Compare going by road or by rail connections.
A north-west journey with a different logic from a visit to the Royal Site.
For hotels in the capital before you set off on an excursion later on.
Send us your flight details and your real address. Knowing whether you finish at the Royal Monastery, in the centre of San Lorenzo, at El Escorial Hospital, at a private address or in the Valley of Cuelgamuros lets us plan the right route from Barajas and spare you unnecessary connections once you reach the sierra.
What sets San Lorenzo de El Escorial apart from the other Madrid airport routes is that the main reason to travel is a Royal Site in the Sierra de Guadarrama. The railway station belongs to neighbouring El Escorial, and other key destinations, the University Hospital and the Valley of Cuelgamuros, are separated by road from the monumental centre. Here, choosing the right drop-off point can matter as much as choosing between car, train and bus.
