Traffic in Ghent is organised around the R40 ring road and several inner traffic sectors. A hotel near Gent-Sint-Pieters requires a different approach from an address close to Korenmarkt, Graslei, Vrijdagmarkt or Sint-Baafsplein. Providing the full address allows us to determine the most suitable access route and the nearest permitted drop-off point.
Most of the journey takes place on motorways, but the final approach requires greater precision. The historic city centre combines a Low Emission Zone, pedestrian streets and a traffic circulation plan that restricts through traffic between different sectors.

Your transfer begins once you have cleared passport control and collected your luggage. There is no need to specify a terminal separately; simply provide your flight number. The final part of the journey depends on your destination, whether it is the railway station, Flanders Expo, the university district, Dampoort or the historic city centre.
Ghent does not have a single drop-off point suitable for every traveller. The main railway station is located south of the city centre, Dampoort lies to the east, Flanders Expo is close to the western access roads, and the historic centre requires access restrictions to be checked for each individual street.
This is a popular destination for passengers continuing their journey by train, staying near the station or meeting other travellers.
Please provide the exact entrance or address if your destination is a hotel on Koningin Astridlaan, near Citadelpark or within the university district rather than the station itself.
These landmarks are located within Ghent's most restricted area. Nearby addresses may be on pedestrian streets or in locations where vehicle access is limited.
The final drop-off point should always be confirmed using the full accommodation address rather than only the nearest square or landmark.
Dampoort is often the most suitable destination for rail connections or accommodation located east of the city centre.
It can also avoid crossing the inner traffic sectors when travelling to addresses near Dok Noord, Sint-Amandsberg or Portus Ganda.
This area is located close to the western access roads and does not require travelling through the historic city centre.

The R40 ring road provides access to the different areas of Ghent. Inside the ring road, the Low Emission Zone applies, while the city's circulation plan prevents vehicles from driving directly through every sector. The final route is therefore planned according to your exact destination.
A couple staying in the historic city centre does not require the same planning as a delegation travelling to Flanders Expo or passengers continuing their journey from Gent-Sint-Pieters. Your travel time, destination address and luggage requirements all influence the most suitable vehicle and final drop-off arrangements.

For your return transfer, it is not enough to simply subtract an hour from your recommended airport arrival time. Your journey first needs to leave the urban traffic sector, join the R40 ring road and continue along the E40 towards Brussels. Peak traffic periods and road conditions may increase the overall travel time.
