Piazzale Roma: where the car stops because Venice has no roads

Venice is the only destination in this area where there is no need to choose a drop-off point: every car transfer ends at Piazzale Roma, the square at the end of the bridge linking the lagoon with the mainland. Beyond it, there are no roads, only canals. Your transfer from Ljubljana Airport crosses into Italy and drops you right there, where you can continue by vaporetto.

How to get from Ljubljana Airport to Venice

Ljubljana Airport is around 250 km from Venice, with a journey time of about three hours and fares from €299. The route crosses into Italy near Trieste before following the A4 motorway west towards the edge of the lagoon, where the Liberty Bridge leads to Piazzale Roma. This is where the road journey ends, as central Venice has no roads for vehicles. Both countries use the euro, so there is no need to exchange currency.

Piazzale Roma is the only point in central Venice accessible by vehicle; from there, you continue by water or on foot.

Via the A4 and the bridge across the lagoon

The journey combines Slovenia's motorway network, the crossing into Italy near Trieste and the Italian A4 motorway, which runs along the Adriatic coast towards Mestre. The final kilometre is the most distinctive: the Liberty Bridge, a causeway almost four kilometres long across the lagoon and the only road route into Venice.

Slovenia

Electronic vignette

The Slovenian section requires a digital vignette linked to the vehicle's registration number, included in the transfer's fixed fare.

Italy

A4 motorway toll

The Italian motorway uses toll barriers rather than a vignette. This is also included in the transfer fare.

From car to water: what to do when you reach Piazzale Roma

Piazzale Roma is not the final destination for most visitors: it is the interchange for water transport. Depending on where your accommodation is in Venice, you will continue your journey in a different way, so it is worth planning ahead, especially when travelling with luggage.

Public transport

Vaporetto

The water bus leaves Piazzale Roma and runs along the Grand Canal and across the lagoon. It is the most economical way to reach your accommodation.

Direct to the door

Water taxi

Private water taxis take you to the landing stage closest to your hotel, with your luggage on board. This is arranged separately once you are in Venice.

On foot

Walking with luggage

If your accommodation is nearby, you can walk there, but bear in mind that bridges and steps can be awkward when carrying large suitcases.

The road transfer ends at Piazzale Roma; onward water transport is arranged separately, depending on your exact destination in Venice.

Vehicle and luggage before the bridges

In Venice, more than anywhere else, your luggage can shape the rest of your journey: as soon as you leave the car at Piazzale Roma, your suitcases have to go onto a vaporetto or water taxi and may need to be carried over bridges with steps. Travelling light and knowing in advance how you will continue to your hotel can make arrival much easier.

The number of passengers and amount of luggage determine the vehicle for your road transfer; you can view the available options in the Zonetransfers fleet. If your journey combines Venice with other stops in Italy or Slovenia, the chauffeur service in Ljubljana allows you to arrange the itinerary with a driver at your disposal. Stops and waiting times are subject to the service terms and conditions.
