How to get from Ljubljana Airport to Plitvice Lakes
The journey is around 250 km and takes close to three hours: from Brnik, the route follows the A2 motorway south-east, crosses into Croatia at the Bregana–Obrežje crossing, bypasses Zagreb on its ring road and continues along the A1 to Karlovac, from where a national road leads to the park. As this is a Schengen crossing, there is normally no need to stop at the border.
This is one of the longest transfers from Ljubljana Airport, so the pick-up time is planned with some extra margin, particularly if your park ticket has an allocated entry time.
The journey, step by step
Unlike a city transfer, this journey crosses two countries and bypasses a capital before reaching the countryside. These are the sections that determine the journey time.
- Brnik Airport and the A2 motorwayLeave the airport and head south-east along the Slovenian A2, with the electronic motorway vignette included in the fare.
- Bregana–Obrežje borderCross into Croatia. This is a Schengen border with no systematic border checks; it is advisable to keep your ID document to hand.
- Zagreb ring roadBypass the Croatian capital without entering the city and join the A1 motorway heading south.
- Karlovac and the road to the parkLeave the motorway at Karlovac and continue along the national road to the Plitvice entrance.
Two motorway toll systems, no currency exchange
The Slovenian section uses an electronic vignette, while the Croatian section has motorway tolls. Both are included in a private transfer with a fixed fare. Since 2023, both countries have used the euro, so there is no need to exchange money when crossing the border.
Arriving at the correct park entrance
After a three-hour journey, the final detail can make all the difference: Plitvice has two main entrances, several kilometres apart, and tickets are usually issued for a specific one. Being dropped at the wrong entrance means an extra journey within the park before your visit can begin.
Entrance 1
At the lower end of the lakes, with its own car park and luggage storage at the tourist information office. A common starting point for visitors heading first to the lower waterfalls.
Entrance 2
Next to the upper lakes, also with parking and luggage storage. It is often the more suitable entrance for accommodation on the southern side of the park.
Your entry time determines the pick-up time
During the season, park tickets are sold with an allocated entry time. With three hours of driving ahead, the airport pick-up is worked backwards from that time, allowing for the journey, a margin for the border crossing and time for flight arrival, customs and baggage reclaim.
Plitvice, a halfway point on the way to the Dalmatian coast
Many of these transfers do not end at the park: they continue south towards Zadar or Split, as Plitvice lies roughly halfway between inland Slovenia and the Dalmatian coast. In this case, it is not the final destination but a stop along a longer journey.
If your journey continues towards the coast after your visit, mention this when requesting a quote so that the journey time, vehicle and fare can be calculated for the complete route.
Vehicle and luggage for a three-hour journey and a national park visit
A long journey with a border crossing and a rural destination calls for a vehicle with plenty of boot space, particularly if you are continuing towards the coast afterwards. The park's wooden walkways are not suitable for wheeled luggage, so it is worth deciding whether your bags should be left in luggage storage, in the vehicle or whether the transfer should stop at your accommodation first.
The number of passengers and pieces of luggage determines the vehicle assigned; you can see the options in the Zonetransfers fleet. If you would prefer to have the driver at your disposal during your visit or for the onward journey to Dalmatia, the chauffeur service in Ljubljana is available. Stops and waiting times are subject to the service terms.
Frequently asked questions

Where do you cross the border?
At the Bregana–Obrežje crossing between Slovenia and Croatia. It is a Schengen border without systematic checks, although it is advisable to keep your ID document to hand.

Yes. The Slovenian section requires an electronic vignette and the Croatian section has motorway tolls; both are included in the price of a transfer with a fixed fare.
Which park entrance will the driver drop me at?
