The key point on this route is the drop-off. Piran's old town, a maze of narrow streets centred around Tartini Square, is closed to vehicle traffic. Cars are left at the large car park at the entrance to the town, beside the coast, from where a free shuttle takes passengers into the centre in just a few minutes.

For this reason, the transfer drops you at this access point rather than outside a hotel within the old town. If your accommodation has a special permit for luggage drop-off, it is worth mentioning this when booking; otherwise, the car park and shuttle are the usual way to complete the final part of the journey.

How to get from Ljubljana Airport to Piran

Ljubljana Airport is around 140 km from Piran, with a journey time of about 1 hour 30 minutes. The entire route stays within Slovenia, with no border crossing. The journey heads south-west along the motorway towards Koper before continuing along the coast to the Piran peninsula. The drop-off takes place at the town entrance, where vehicle access ends.

Although Piran lies on the same Istrian coast as Croatian towns such as Rovinj, this journey remains entirely within Slovenia, so there is no border crossing.

Piran developed under Venetian rule, and its heritage can be seen in Tartini Square, its bell towers and the tightly packed houses overlooking the sea. Just next door is Portorož, a seaside resort with beaches and large hotels, while further south lie the Sečovlje salt pans, a landscape of water and salt that is still used for salt production. Many travellers combine Piran with one of these two destinations.

That contrast — Piran's pedestrianised historic centre and Portorož's open coastline — is why it is important to specify the exact destination: being dropped off at the entrance to Piran is not the same as arriving at a beachfront hotel in Portorož, where vehicles have direct road access.

This is a beach and short-break destination, so luggage is usually typical of a summer trip.
