Ljubljana Airport to Lake Bohinj: Taxi & Private Transfer

Triglav National Park

Bohinj, the wild lake of Triglav surrounded by a valley of villages

If Bled is the picture-postcard destination, Bohinj is the real mountain experience: Slovenia's largest natural lake, nestled within Triglav National Park and quieter and less developed than its better-known neighbour. Bohinj is not a single village, but a valley with several settlements around the lake, so getting there smoothly starts with knowing which one your accommodation is in.

Bohinj is not a single point: it is a valley of villages beside the lake

The name Bohinj covers several settlements spread throughout the valley, each with its own access and atmosphere. Telling us which one your accommodation is in allows us to set the correct drop-off point, as there are several kilometres between some of them.

Eastern shore

Ribčev Laz and Stara Fužina

The lakeside centre, with its church and stone bridge, and the neighbouring village. This is the busier part of the lakeshore.

Ukanc and Bohinjska Bistrica

Ukanc, at the western end of the lake beneath the Vogel cable car; Bohinjska Bistrica, the largest village, with a railway station and slightly further from the lake.

How to get from Ljubljana Airport to Bohinj

Ljubljana Airport is around 85 km from Bohinj, with a journey time of about one hour and 15 minutes. The route stays within Slovenia and does not cross any borders. It joins the motorway towards the north-west, passes near Bled and continues up the valley to the lake. Drop-off is at the village and accommodation specified when booking, as the valley is spread across several settlements.

The journey is slightly longer than to Bled because the destination lies further into the mountains; in return, you arrive in a much quieter setting.

A protected lake, with a cable car and waterfall

Lake Bohinj lies within a national park, which affects access during the peak season: traffic and parking around the lakeshore are regulated to protect the natural environment, with paid parking areas and restrictions on the busiest days. It is worth bearing this in mind when planning your drop-off and visits.

Lake Bohinj in Triglav National Park, destination for a transfer from Ljubljana Airport

Two places define the valley: the Vogel cable car, which rises from Ukanc to a mountain viewpoint above the lake —and to the ski slopes in winter—, and Savica Waterfall, at the western end, a popular destination for one of the area's classic walks. Both can be arranged as part of the transfer if they are included in your itinerary.

Vehicle and luggage for the valley

Bohinj attracts two main types of traveller: summer visitors with lighter luggage for swimming and walking, and winter visitors heading to Vogel to ski with bulkier equipment. The vehicle is assigned according to the number of passengers, luggage and, where applicable, ski equipment, taking the mountain road conditions in the colder months into account.

You can see the available options in the Zonetransfers fleet. If your itinerary combines Bohinj with Bled or other destinations in the park, the chauffeur service in Ljubljana allows you to arrange the journey with the driver at your disposal. Stops and waiting times are subject to the service terms and conditions.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take from Ljubljana Airport to Bohinj?

About one hour and 15 minutes for a journey of around 85 km, entirely within Slovenia. It takes slightly longer than the journey to Bled because the lake is further into the mountains.

Which village in the valley will the car drop me off at?

At the location specified in your booking: Ribčev Laz or Stara Fužina by the lake, Ukanc at the far end of the valley, or Bohinjska Bistrica, the largest village. It is worth specifying this because there are several kilometres between them.

Are there traffic or parking restrictions around the lake?

Yes, during the peak season. As the area is within a national park, access and parking around the lakeshore are regulated, with paid parking areas and restrictions on the busiest days.

Can I take the Vogel cable car?

Yes, the cable car departs from Ukanc, at the western end of the lake. The transfer can drop you at the base station, with the cable car journey arranged separately, whether you are skiing in winter or visiting for the views in summer.

Can I visit Savica Waterfall?

Yes, it is at the western end of the valley. If it is part of your itinerary, the stop can be agreed when booking.

How is Bohinj different from Bled?

Bohinj is larger, quieter and within the national park, with less development around the lake. Bled is more tourist-oriented and famous for its island and castle. Many travellers combine the two.

Can I use the route in winter to ski at Vogel?

Yes. During the snow season, the vehicle travels with the winter equipment required by Slovenian law, and ski equipment can be carried if specified when booking.

How do I arrange my return to Ljubljana Airport?

Book with the exact pick-up point in the relevant village and your flight time, allowing around one hour and 15 minutes for the journey plus sufficient time for check-in and other airport formalities.
