Plan the Gaztelugatxe entry time before arranging your airport pickup
During Easter, the May bank holidays and the summer period, as well as weekends and public holidays in the shoulder season, access to the bridge and staircase operates through timed slots from 09:30 to 19:00, with access until 17:00 from late October. Slots are free to book at tiketa.eus/gaztelugatxe, with a maximum of 10 people per booking and a QR code that can be modified up to 2 hours beforehand. Outside these dates and times, access is unrestricted. Because the transfer needs to match your reserved entry time, it is best to secure the Gaztelugatxe slot first and then arrange the airport pickup around it.
Why the drop-off point matters at busy times
The car park beside the Gaztelugatxe access point is free, but it can fill quickly at weekends and during the summer. When it is full, the usual alternative is to park in Bakio, around 5 km away, and continue by local bus or take a coastal walk of approximately one and a half hours. A private transfer avoids having to rely on parking availability: the driver drops passengers directly by the access point to the viewpoint and staircase, without requiring a diversion to Bakio.
What to consider before walking the 231 steps
The route to the hermitage involves going down and back up all 231 steps, with no shade along the staircase. The time of your visit therefore affects your exposure to sunlight and to the Cantabrian wind, which can be stronger here than on nearby beaches. If your reserved slot is around midday in summer, water and sun protection are worth taking with you. An earlier visit offers softer light for photography and coincides with lower visitor numbers.

Do you also book the Gaztelugatxe entry slot?
No. The timed reservation for access to the bridge and staircase must be arranged directly at tiketa.eus/gaztelugatxe and is free of charge. The transfer is then scheduled around the entry slot already reserved by the passenger.
What if there are no entry slots available for my date?
Outside Easter, the May bank holidays, summer and shoulder-season weekends, access is unrestricted and no reservation is required. If your visit falls during a period requiring a timed reservation and no slots are available, check this before confirming the transfer pickup time.
Is this a metered taxi?
No. The service is provided by a chauffeur-driven vehicle (VT or VTC) at a fixed fare per journey, confirmed when booking. There is no taximeter and no additional waiting-time charge within the agreed conditions.
