Barcelona to the Andorran border
The transfer leaves Barcelona-El Prat and crosses into Andorra before continuing through the main valley towards the eastern part of the country.
Private transfers from Barcelona-El Prat to El Tarter start from 295 €. The journey covers around 206 km and takes approximately 2 h 55 min to 3 h 20 min, depending on road and border conditions. El Tarter is in the parish of Canillo, at around 1,710 metres, and the final approach continues along the CG-2 after passing through Andorra la Vella, Encamp and Canillo.
El Tarter is not simply another way of saying Andorra. It is a distinct destination in the parish of Canillo and one of the sectors of Grandvalira. For a road transfer, the final destination matters because the route continues beyond the central part of Andorra and follows the CG-2 towards Encamp, Canillo and El Tarter.
The transfer leaves Barcelona-El Prat and crosses into Andorra before continuing through the main valley towards the eastern part of the country.
After Andorra la Vella, the road runs through Encamp and Canillo before reaching El Tarter.
El Tarter provides access to one of Grandvalira's principal sectors, making it a specific destination for ski travellers rather than simply a generic Andorra arrival.
Both are in the parish of Canillo and form part of Grandvalira, but they are different villages and sectors. If your accommodation is in Soldeu, the booking should name Soldeu as the destination and continue further along the CG-2.
Grandvalira places the El Tarter sector at around 1,710 m. The sector has its own gondola, ski school, ski storage, lockers, cafeteria, medical centre and parking areas. For a ski trip, the exact location of the accommodation can therefore be more useful than simply stating that the hotel is in Andorra.
Grandvalira identifies the El Tarter gondola as an access point to the slopes and documents direct access from the parking area to the ticket offices, ski school, ski storage and other sector services.
P3 is identified by Grandvalira among the operational parking areas in El Tarter, with specific spaces for people with reduced mobility.
El Tarter also has the Prat de la Costa car park, whose operation is specifically regulated.
Barcelona-El Prat operates through T1 and T2. For a journey of almost three hours, having the correct terminal information before departure helps avoid unnecessary movement between terminals at the start of the trip.
El Tarter is located in a high-mountain environment, so snow and ice can affect the road journey. Andorra has specific winter requirements concerning special equipment during the relevant period.
During this period, regulations require chains or equivalent equipment to be available for use, subject to the stated exceptions for vehicles fitted with winter or M+S tyres. When roads are covered by snow or ice, the corresponding snow phases and colour system also apply.
The published duration is an estimate under reasonable conditions. Snow, traffic approaching ski resorts or delays at the border can materially change the actual journey time, particularly during the winter season.
Ski equipment can make a significant difference to vehicle requirements on this route. Four passengers travelling with standard luggage may have different space requirements from four passengers carrying skis, snowboards, boots and children's equipment as well.
A car may be suitable when the number of passengers and luggage fits the actual capacity of the selected vehicle category.
Tell us about skis, snowboards and boots before confirming the booking so the available space can be checked alongside your luggage.
Larger ski groups can use a vehicle category designed to keep passengers, luggage and sports equipment together during the journey.
A scheduled bus is another way to travel from Barcelona-El Prat into Andorra. Andbus operates services from both T1 and T2 and publishes a network of more than 180 stops within the Principality. For El Tarter specifically, check the service available on your travel date to establish whether the selected option reaches the destination directly or requires a final connection.
| Travel point | Private transfer | Bus |
|---|---|---|
| Departure | Coordinated with the booking and flight | Based on the published timetable |
| Barcelona to Andorra | Reserved service for your group | Andbus publishes services from T1 and T2 |
| Andorra to El Tarter | Part of the same booked transfer | Check the selected stop or service type |
| Ski equipment | Capacity assessed before booking | Subject to the operator's conditions and available capacity |
| Final destination | Booked address in El Tarter | Stop included in the selected service |
That published fare applies to Andorra bus station, with services scheduled approximately every two hours for a substantial part of the day. The option may therefore suit solo travellers or couples when the timetable and final connection work for their itinerary.
Grandvalira treats El Tarter and Soldeu as separate sectors. El Tarter is around 1,710 m, while Soldeu is around 1,800 m. Although both are part of the same ski area and parish, a road transfer to Soldeu continues beyond El Tarter along the CG-2.
The sector has its own gondola, ski school, ski storage and parking. If the accommodation is in El Tarter, there is no need to continue to Soldeu.
Soldeu lies further along the CG-2 and should be entered as a separate destination when the hotel or apartment is actually there.
Grandvalira covers several valleys, sectors and elevations. For a road transfer, the relevant destination could be Canillo, El Tarter, Soldeu, Grau Roig or Pas de la Casa, depending on the actual accommodation address.
The return route starts with the descent along the CG-2 through Canillo and Encamp before crossing the central area of Andorra, returning into Spain and continuing for more than 200 km to T1 or T2 at Barcelona-El Prat.
Snow forecasts, ski-resort traffic and road or border incidents can all affect the journey. The 2 h 55 min reference does not include the time required before your flight at Barcelona Airport.
El Tarter shares part of its wider journey corridor with several Andorran destinations, while other mountain resorts remain in Catalonia and follow different routes. The correct destination should always reflect the actual location of the accommodation.
Continue along the CG-2 beyond El Tarter to another major Grandvalira ski destination at a higher elevation.
Continue much further along the CG-2 towards one of Andorra's highest destinations, close to France.
Finish in the capital rather than continuing towards Encamp, Canillo and the Grandvalira sectors.
Another Andorran ski destination, reached via La Massana and the CG-5 rather than the eastern Canillo route.
Stop before crossing into Andorra and finish in the main city of the Alt Urgell area.
A Pyrenean alternative that remains in Catalonia and reaches Cerdanya without entering Andorra.
A longer ski route towards Val d’Aran, with a different final corridor and no shared border crossing with the El Tarter route.
Finish before the high mountains in a pre-Pyrenean town on the C-16 corridor.
Replace the mountain and border journey with a hotel arrival on the Mediterranean coast.
A route in the opposite direction from El Prat, aimed at coastal holidays rather than winter access to mountain resorts.
No. They are separate villages and Grandvalira sectors within the parish of Canillo. Soldeu lies further along the CG-2, so it should be selected as the destination when the accommodation is there.
Yes. Sports equipment takes up different space from conventional luggage and may affect the vehicle category required, even when there are only a few passengers.
The El Tarter sector of Grandvalira has a gondola, ski school, ski storage, lockers and its own services. The actual distance between your accommodation and the ski access depends on the exact address.
Regular services operate from T1 and T2 to Andorra, with operators publishing an extensive network of stops within the Principality. For El Tarter, check the service and travel date to see whether the selected ticket reaches the destination directly or requires a final connection.
Yes. Around 2 h 55 min is a reference time rather than a guarantee. Road conditions, snow, ski-resort traffic and border traffic can all increase the journey time, particularly during the winter season.
Grandvalira covers several sectors, valleys and elevations, but your transfer ends at a specific door. Provide the hotel, apartment or exact address in El Tarter so the final section of the CG-2 is included in the journey planned from Barcelona-El Prat rather than becoming an issue after almost three hours on the road.
