≈ 30–55 min depending on traffic and destination

The A-8 covers the main route; Luarca's town centre affects the final approach

The route towards Valdés follows the A-8 Cantabrian Motorway. Within Luarca, the historic area is centred around the mouth of the Negro River and includes neighbourhoods such as La Pescadería, El Cambaral and La Carril, while the main commercial area stretches along both sides of the river.

The port, fishing neighbourhoods and higher areas do not all have the same final access

La Pescadería retains a network of narrow lanes, while El Cambaral combines narrow streets with steep sections. When arranging your transfer, it is therefore advisable to specify your accommodation or exact drop-off point rather than simply giving “Luarca” as the destination.

This is particularly relevant if your destination is near the port, in one of the historic neighbourhoods or towards Villar and Barcellina.

The airport bus does not continue directly to Luarca

Aena publishes direct connections from Asturias Airport to Avilés, Gijón and Oviedo. Services to Avilés and Gijón also stop at Piedras Blancas and Salinas, but Luarca is not listed as a direct destination.

Options for continuing from Asturias Airport to Luarca
Option How it works Approximate journey time End of journey
Private transfer Direct road journey Journey times of around 30 to 55 min Drop-off point specified in the booking

By bus, you need to check two timetables, not just the airport departure

Aena publishes departures from the airport approximately every hour between 6:00 and 00:00. To continue to Luarca, the onward service from the interchange point must also fit your journey, so the total travel time depends on the connection available on the date of travel.

Your arrival time and location in Luarca can affect the final leg

Local transport

The local bus service finishes in the early afternoon

Valdés Town Council publishes an urban bus service on weekdays only, with an hourly frequency. The first service leaves at 7:55 and the last at 13:55; a later arrival cannot rely on this service to complete a further local leg.

Beach area

Access can be slower between June and September

The beach car park has two-way access via narrow lanes, with entry and exit through the same point. Turismo de Valdés states that traffic can become slow when the car park fills up, usually between 12:00 and 18:00.

If you're comparing it with driving or hiring a car

In July and August, some car parks near the centre can fill up

La Curtidora has 223 free spaces around 600 metres from the Town Hall square and is often full on bank holiday weekends and during July and August. The Villar car park, around 400 metres from the port, is only available in July and August. These are factors worth considering if the alternative to a transfer is driving and finding parking yourself in Luarca.

Specific questions about travelling between Asturias and Luarca

Does the published price for Luarca apply if my accommodation is in another part of Valdés?

It should not be assumed. Luarca is the capital of the Valdés municipality, but other towns and villages within the municipality are separate destinations. The published reference price applies to Luarca; if your accommodation is elsewhere, you should specify the exact destination so the applicable fare can be confirmed.

Can I travel from Luarca back to Asturias Airport by bus?

Yes, although the connections checked are not direct. One option departs from Luarca bus station, changes in Salinas and continues to Asturias Airport. The current reference journey time is around 1 hour and 12 minutes, but the timetable should be checked for the specific flight date.

Are Luarca bus station and railway station in the same place?

No. Valdés Town Council lists the bus station at García Prieto, s/n, and the railway station at Avenida de la Estación, s/n. It is important to distinguish between them when arranging a connection or pick-up point.

Where is the taxi rank currently designated by the council in Luarca?

The final amendment to the municipal by-law published in August 2026 sets the Luarca taxi rank at Paseo de Gómez, 1, with space for 15 vehicles. It can be a useful local alternative if you arrive in Luarca by another means of transport and still have a final leg of your journey to complete.
